Shelford Constructions contributed to the delivery of the Bon Scott Memorial Precinct at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, a public realm revitalisation project for the Department of Transport centred around one of Fremantle's most recognisable cultural landmarks.
Located between the Fishing Boat Harbour and Mews Road, the precinct occupies a prominent position at the intersection of heavily used pedestrian areas and forms an important gateway into the waterfront tourism precinct.
The project transformed the spaces surrounding the existing bronze Bon Scott statue into a more welcoming, accessible and flexible public environment designed to improve pedestrian movement, provide additional seating and encourage visitors to spend time within the precinct.
At the centre of the redevelopment is a dual-level deck incorporating the Bon Scott memorial statue, designed to function as both seating and a stage. Curved recycled jarrah seating takes advantage of views towards the water and allows the space to accommodate events of varying scales. A small landscaped turf area surrounded by custom timber seating provides an additional informal space within the precinct.
The completed development provides a distinctive public space that celebrates Fremantle's connection with Bon Scott while strengthening the arrival experience at the Fishing Boat Harbour.

Key Features
Bon Scott Memorial
The centrepiece of the precinct is the existing cast-bronze statue of former AC/DC frontman Bon Scott, created by Fremantle artist Greg James.
The revitalised public space creates a stronger setting around the memorial, allowing visitors greater opportunity to interact with and experience the landmark.
Dual-Level Timber Deck
A dual-level deck surrounding the memorial provides a flexible space capable of functioning as both informal seating and an event stage.
Tiered curves of recycled jarrah seating were configured to maximise views towards the waterfront while allowing the area to accommodate gatherings and events of different sizes.
Public Realm & Landscaping
A small oval turf area surrounded by custom timber seating creates a softer landscaped space within the broader hardscape environment.
The combination of timber, landscaping and paving transforms what is essentially a major pedestrian movement zone into somewhere visitors can also stop, sit and experience the waterfront.
Construction Challenges
A Prominent Waterfront Location
The Bon Scott Memorial Precinct occupies a constrained location between Mews Road and Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, at the junction of two heavily pedestrianised areas.
The revitalisation needed to improve movement through this important gateway while also creating spaces where visitors could comfortably stop, gather and interact with the memorial.
The resulting design balances pedestrian circulation with seating, landscaping and flexible event space within the constrained waterfront setting.
