Overview
The poor conditions of the existing holding tanks within The City of Melville’s Operations Centre facilities in Murdoch, required some major works. Shelford Constructions was appointed the Contract to demolish and replace the existing bin tanks used for storage of various bulk materials.
The works involved the demolition of existing concrete bin tanks with up to 300mm thick concrete walls and building six (6) brand new storage holding tanks including footings, drainage and retaining works.
Prominent features
Heavily reinforced 200mm concrete tilt panel walls with custom manufactured crash prevention rails cast into the panels. Tiered reinforced concrete raft footings with over 50 cogged starter bars threaded into tilt-panel grout tubes. Graded infill slabs to new ACO drainage systems formed into existing bitumen levels.
Project Challenges
Some of the challenges Shelford had to deal with involved lacing grout tubes over starter bars, tiered raft footings, working within an active Operations Centre, existing site levels and Class 2 demolition. Fortunately, Shelford was able to successfully complete this project up to a high-quality standard and within the agreed timeline and budget. Minor issues related to particular site constrains with all subcontracted staff were resolved as soon as they arose.
Access into secured complex, exclusion zones and traffic management, customised steelwork cast-into tilt panels, grout tubes and casting beds were implemented. The works required under contract were considered relatively straight forward, but the location was challenging. It was within a heavily trafficked area which meant that communication with the Operations Centre supervisors was imperative and ultimately the key to the success in quality and delivery this project.
